Come join us on Tuesday 23rd April at 11am for a very special puppet show by the extremely talented String Bean Puppets:
“Flutter” A short tailed bat who is afraid of the dark is befriended by a sparkly glow worm who thinks she is a star. The show is for 3-10 year olds. It’s about over coming your fears and includes some of Aotearoa's unique fauna and flora and the threats they face. The threat of introduced predators to our native species and the relationship between the short tailed bat and Te Pua o te Rēinga (Dactylanthus) is part of this story. The puppet show will be followed by a short talk from our Head Ranger about Te Pua o te Rēinga (Dactylanthus). Then we’ll give you the opportunity to view this rare plant which is in flower at our reserve.
Entry to Flutter is by koha. For those wanting to see Te Pua o te Rēinga in flower, standard admission fees will apply.
On Thursday 25th April (Anzac Day) at 1pm we have a story telling session with local author Bianca Begovich.
Bianca is a children’s writer and yoga teacher. She has published six books for children about caring for the environment through CreateBooks. All will be available for sale at Nga Manu as she reads her story 'The Earth and Me' on Thursday 25th April. She is also a published poet and in 2016 was awarded second place in the Rangitawa short story competition for her story about 'Koro Jack', an old whitebait who travels his local rivers and out to sea. She lives in Kāpiti with her husband, three teenagers, one dog, eight chickens and several thousand bees.
Entry is free for this session. Standard admission fees apply for those who wish to explore the reserve before or after.
We’re also open every day during the holiday break from 10am to 5pm. For families we have concession passes available, which include entry for up to 3 children. Click here for more detail.

Get Creative for your Free Entry to see the WHITE FERNS at the Cello Basin Reserve on the 29th March, 2024
If you have been to a recent female sporting event in New Zealand, you may have seen POI used at the game as a symbol of empowerment for wāhine, and a way of celebrating and showing support for our New Zealand athletes. Building upon the excitement of world cups, NZC would like to continue the momentum by encouraging the people of Aotearoa New Zealand and our manuhiri (international visitors) to karawhiua (give it heaps) and give POI a go! New Zealand Cricket are calling the Tamariki around Wellington to get creative with their POI-making skills and bring them along to the Cello Basin Reserve for the upcoming WHITE Fern vs ENGLAND series. On Friday 29th March, we would like to offer free entry into the Cello Basin Reserve to children who present a homemade POI at the gate. One Free Child entry will apply for each POI that is shown at the box office, please note adult tickets will still need to be purchased. WHAT IS THIS STUDY ABOUT?
With the START CARE study we are comparing two different ways of
treating asthma to find out which one is better at preventing asthma
exacerbations in tamariki.
· A separate preventer (Flixotide, Serotide or Symbicort) taken every
day and reliever (Ventolin or Respigen) taken when needed;
OR
· A single combined preventer and reliever (Symbicort) taken when
needed and/or every day
The inhalers being used are called “Turbuhalers”, they are breath
activated and do not require a spacer like most common inhalers
currently used. During the first visit the child is taught how to use the
Turbuhaler safely. At the second visit, if their asthma is stable, the child
will be given one of the treatments (decided at random) to take for one
year.
If the child’s asthma is bad, or they have an asthma exacerbation, we
might want to increase the amount of the study inhaler(s) they are taking.
During the study, we will meet with each participant and their whanau 6
times at our clinic. We will ask questions about their asthma and perform
some breathing tests.
All study medication is provided free-of-charge during the study and
parents will be reimbursed for their travel expenses.
This study is for children aged between 5 years to 11 years old who have
asthma.

Aikido for juniors. Aikido is a martial art with a difference, its focus being on defence rather than attack: a non-violent, defensive art. Aikido is renowned for its benefits for self-control, co-ordination and posture, and like all martial arts promotes confidence and provides fun, fitness and friendship. We are a not-for-profit organisation teaching the art of aikido, based in Kaiwharawhara, in our 30th year. Classes for ‘Aiki Kids’ (around 6+ to 12 years) 5:30pm every Monday in school terms, and our ‘Aiki Teens’ train every Monday and Wednesday 6:30pm. First 3 lessons free, then $80 per term, with 10% discount for families. City Dojo, 132 Hutt Rd, Kaiwharawhara, Wellington, directly above Animates pet shop.
